Community-Based Doula

Major Responsibilities:

Provide doula services to families who accept the program: prenatal education and support, preparation for labor and delivery.    1)Provide information, education, and resources that will prepare the parent and her family for the birth process.    2)To complete the Doulas of North American (DONA) certification process.    3)Initiate contact with participants in their third trimester and provide weekly visits.    4)Attend prenatal appointments with participants when appropriate.    5)Assist families in establishing goals and a birth plan for accomplishing those goals.    6)Conduct outreach activities.Provide labor/delivery and postpartum support.    1)To be on-call to attend births of assigned participants and provide back-up assistance to other doula.    2)Provide on-going breastfeeding support and information to participants.    3)Collaborate effectively with hospital staff.    4)Assist in the transitioning of participants into ongoing HFI services when appropriate.    5)Assist families in initiating and strengthening the parent-child relationship.Maintains appropriate documentation.    1)Keeps written documentation of all client contacts on appropriate forms.    2)Enters doula client contacts, case notes, referral information, and child's medical data into Cornerstone computer system.    3)Organizes each client file with appropriate documentation (intake/discharge forms, consents, case notes, home visitation records, birth plans, referrals, etc.).


Education/Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in human services related field OR Associate's degree plus relevant childbirth or women's health experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.Interest in working with parents and infants/toddlers, providing home-based services.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.Good written and verbal communication skills.Good interpersonal skills.Ability to learn about and work with community agencies.Ability to learn to work with appropriate developmental education materials for infants/toddlers (up to age 5).Interest and ability to learn about prenatal, labor/delivery, postpartum support.DONA Certification within 1 year of employment.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases. Services provided in off-campus locations, primarily the home. Early evening hours.On-call availability for labor and delivery.If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
