Department Manager, Transportation (Civil Engineering)

DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a dynamic and experienced Transportation Department Manager to lead and grow our Transportation practice in Phoenix Arizona. This leadership role is ideal for a motivated professional with a strong background in transportation and site civil infrastructure projects, particularly those involving highways, roads, and municipal developments.

As a key member of our Arizona Transportation Team, you will collaborate closely with senior leadership and multidisciplinary teams across the Western Region to deliver high-quality engineering solutions and drive strategic growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Direction: Shape the vision, culture, and direction of the department, aligning with company goals and regional priorities. Business Development: Support strategic positioning and pursuit of new project opportunities across Arizona and the broader Western Region (west of Texas). Client Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met while advancing Michael Baker’s reputation and interests. Project Management: Lead and manage a variety of transportation and site civil projects, from simple to complex, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule adherence. Operational Oversight: Monitor and manage department utilization and performance metrics. Contracting & Execution: Oversee successful project contracting and execution in collaboration with regional and office leadership. Program Coordination: Assist in identifying and aligning projects with agency TIP/CIP programs. Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of 4 to 8 technical professionals, overseeing training, career development, and performance evaluations. Leadership Collaboration: Actively contribute to the regional transportation and civil leadership team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field. Minimum of 15 years of experience in transportation or site civil engineering, with a strong emphasis on roadway and infrastructure design. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Arizona, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months; additional state registrations are a plus. At least 7 years of project management experience with Arizona DOT, counties, or municipalities. Proven track record of successful client relationships and leadership in proposal development and project pursuits.

COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $136,000-$236,000. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate. This position is eligible for a bonus at the discretion of senior leadership.
