A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN As an Engineering Technician, you operate and maintain our electrical cooperative's communication systems, technical services, and security systems. You install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair technical services equipment including substation equipment, relay meters, recloser controls, protective relays, battery chargers, transducers, LM control units, capacitor controls, and related telemetry devices. You ensure that our systems, SCADA, security programs, and metering programs are effective and efficient in relation to personnel, safety, policies, vehicles, and equipment. You assist in the installation, programming, and maintenance of SCADA and instrumentation equipment at power substations, breaker stations, and other remote sites. You maintain our mobile land-based trunked radio system and radio frequency equipment used for SCADA communications. This includes repairing and upgrading radios, doing frequency checks, and taking power measurements. You also oversee various electrical tests as required. Whether microwave radios, cellular wireless networking devices, LAN cabling, polyphaser metering, or electrical wiring, you know how to work with it all! As needed, you make recommendations and take corrective actions to ensure we comply with all required regulations. With attention to detail, you are conscientious about keeping up-to-date and accurate documentation of everything you do. You also keep a well-stocked and organized inventory of all materials and tools necessary for your work. And, when an emergency outage or major storm occurs, you are always ready to help save the day! QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN + High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 2 years of college-level education in electronics or similar field of study OR equivalent experience + 2 years of experience directly related to the electrical, electronics, or telecommunications industries + Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices associated with technical services systems including telecommunications, SCADA, AMI, and security + General knowledge of the construction, operation, and maintenance of all systems + Knowledgeable about regulations and standards for all technical equipment + An excellent understanding of Internet communication systems and protocol + Have or obtain within six months of hire a valid First Aid and CPR certificates + Ability to pass a drug screening + Ability to work at various heights in extreme weather conditions and in rough terrain for extended periods of time + Valid Virginia driver's license and acceptable insurability Experience with SCADA, Load Management, AMI, and AMR equipment is desired but not necessarily required.
