We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Geotechnical Field Professional to perform both field and technical assignments under the coaching of mid-to-senior level geotechnical engineers and provide a variety of geotechnical tasks. These tasks will develop knowledge and abilities required to apply standard techniques, procedures and criteria and provide experience and familiarization with the staff, methods, practices and programs of the company. In this role, you will conduct analyses of work according to standard geotechnical procedures on simple projects or on parts of more complex projects, performing on-site inspections field work along with reviewing data for correctness. The Geotechnical Field Professional with work directly with other Geotechnical and Drilling personnel.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and thrives in outdoor work environments, solving challenges in real time and collaborating with a team with some exposure to geotechnical principles and procedures. This position requires frequent travel to job sites and offers excellent opportunities for technical training in a dynamic industry.
**Responsibilities**
+ Perform engineering duties including data reduction, analysis and field work for commercial and residential projects.
+ Conduct field inspections of geotechnical sites, sampling and testing of soils to verify compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
+ Conduct site reconnaissance, laying out borings, one-call tickets and preparation of field instructions.
+ Assist with sampling and data needed for geotechnical reports.
+ Perform hand auger borings with dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing, conduct test pit observation, assist with double-ring infiltration tests and ReMi testing and report accurate findings.
+ Properly collect, label, and transport samples from job sites to laboratory for further testing and analysis.
+ Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures.
+ Complete detailed reports, logs, and documentation of test results, ensuring accuracy and timely submission to project managers daily.
+ Conduct visual classification of soils and accurately document test results, observations, and site conditions, prepare and submit timely and detailed reports, logs, and presentations in accordance with company standards.
+ Assist with project management and reporting for geotechnical projects.
+ Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures.
+ Assist as a backup driller’s assistant for geotechnical drilling as needed.
+ Communicate effectively both verbally and electronically with field supervisors, contractors, staff, project managers and department managers, providing real-time updates on job status, site conditions, and any issues encountered.
+ Adhere to project timelines and schedules, reporting to job sites on time and completing assignments within established deadlines.
+ Adapt to changing project requirements, schedules, and weather conditions, maintaining flexibility to support business needs.
+ Follow strict safety protocols and OSHA regulations to maintain a safe work environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to company and client safety guidelines.
+ Operate and maintain an assigned company vehicle, including scheduling routine maintenance (oil changes, tire checks, fluid levels) and ensuring general cleanliness inside and out.
+ Perform other duties as assigned to support project goals and company initiatives.
**Qualifications**
+ High school diploma or equivalent required.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or similar field is preferred.
+ 1-4 years of experience in construction, materials testing, geotechnical, or related industry experience is required.
+ Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; ability to operate company-assigned vehicles safely.
+ Commitment to workplace safety, following OSHA standards and company safety policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
+ Computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and engineering design software or similar industry tools is required.
+ Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
+ Ability to read, write, and interpret blueprints, procedures, manuals, technical documents, and reports related to drilling, safety, and project requirements.
+ Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in written form with the use of technology/computers.
+ Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working in various weather and environmental conditions.
+ Efficient time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
+ Ability to interpret ASTM standards and construction documents and accurately complete field paperwork as prescribed.
+ Attention to detail to ensure accurate sample collection, testing procedures, and documentation.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment to producing high-quality results.
+ Flexibility to work varying schedules, including early mornings, weekends and/or overtime as project demands require.
**Physical Demands & Work Environment**
+ Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday.
+ Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required.
+ You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region.
+ Typically, this position involves 60% field work, 40% office work, depending on the week/work.
+ Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Sites may not be accessible by vehicle, requiring travel on foot through wetlands, swamps, grasslands, fields, and other uneven or rugged terrain with natural and man-made obstacles such as sand, brush, and debris.
+ Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and potentially repetitive motions.
+ Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit).
+ Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 100lbs.
