Overview Overview: Position is located on Ascension Island. What You’ll Do The Hydroponics Lead is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF) greenhouse operation dedicated to producing food crops, including managing plant cultivation, environmental controls, staff, harvest schedules, and quality standards to ensure consistent and high-yield food production, while adhering to safety and sustainability practices. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities: Develop and implement crop rotation plans to optimize yield and soil health. Monitor plant health, identify and address pest and disease issues, and implement preventative measures. Manage seeding, transplanting, and harvesting schedules according to market demand. Regulate greenhouse temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels to optimize plant growth. Monitor and adjust irrigation systems to maintain proper soil moisture levels. Manage lighting systems to support plant development during different growth stages. Ensure staff adheres to safety protocols and proper handling procedures. Delegate tasks and coordinate team efforts to meet production goals. Conduct regular quality checks on harvested produce to ensure compliance with food safety standards. Implement measures to minimize post-harvest losses and maintain product freshness. Monitor and record data on plant growth, yield, and quality metrics. Develop and manage greenhouse budgets, including cost control measures for inputs like fertilizers, seeds, and utilities. Maintain accurate inventory records of plants, supplies, and equipment. Stay updated on new technologies and sustainable farming practices in greenhouse production. Responsible for proper utilization and safeguarding of all government and contractor provided property (e.g., to include government facilities, equipment and tools). Responsible for precise execution of company time reporting procedures and accurate completion of timesheet. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education: Equivalent experience from which comparable knowledge and job skills can be obtained may be substituted for education, if degree is required. Must have a High School diploma or equivalent, associate degree preferred in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field Certifications: Must have and maintain a current Serve-Safe certification Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in commercial greenhouse operations, particularly with food crop production Strong understanding of plant physiology, pest management, and disease control Ability to work independently and to use own initiative. Good communications skills both oral and written. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet production deadlines Other Requirements: Must have a current, valid Passport, Driver’s License and have ability to obtain any visa required Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English fluently. Must be able to pass employment and deployment qualification requirements that include psychological, medical, dental, drug testing, background checks, etc. Candidate should be other country national (OCN) or local national (LN) Skills and Technology Used: Must be knowledgeable in Tri-Service Food Code, DAFMAN 34-131, AFMAN 48-147, and FDA Food Code, Food Service Program Management Armed Forces Recipe System, inventory control, HACCP, and the U.S Department of Health and Human Services Food Code standards. Must have a strong safety awareness Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet production deadlines.
