Medical Physicist

Responsible for proper use, performance and calibration of radiation-producing equipment and materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs monthly calibrations and documentation for all ionizing radiation machines and said devices in Radiation Therapy. Performs annual calibration of radiation therapy equipment. Verification of patient dosages and treatment aids. Chart review for correctness of calculations, layout diagrams, etc. Conducts hospital service presentations as well as provides consultant services to the hospital and physicians concerning radiation safety. Functions as hospital’s Radiation Safety Officer (or assistant). This may entail monthly, quarterly and annual reports; structural review; instrument calibrations; radiation surveys; radioactive material handling; etc. Performs quality assurance checks for all said radiation equipment in Radiation Therapy. Assists Radiation Oncologist in patient treatment planning process and supervises the dosimetry staff on a daily need basis. Provides administrative/leadership role for physicians and staff, plus continuing education of current and new technology as related to radiation equipment and safety. Computerization of current therapy data. Reviews and determines best dose optimization for computer beam data. Helps maintains Hospital QI program reportable to NRC, ACR, and JCAHO. Conducts hospital service presentations as well as provides consultant services to the hospital and physicians concerning radiation safety.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Master’s or Doctorate degree in Medical Physics from a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics program. Must be board eligible or board certified through the ABR (American Board of Radiology) or the ABMP (American Board of Medical Physicists. If board eligible, must take exam within one year of hire and pass within two years. 1 year of experience in a Medical Physics environment. Should have SRS, SBRT, instrument calibration and dosimetry experience. BLS certification required. Certification must be issued directly by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
