Element is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Metallurgist to perform a wide range of metallurgical evaluations, with a strong emphasis on microstructure analysis and customer communication. This role supports aerospace and advanced manufacturing clients by delivering timely, accurate, and high-quality metallurgical assessments that meet industry standards and customer expectations.
Salary: $25-35/hour (depending on experience)
Hours: 8-5pm
Responsibilities
Technical Evaluation:
Conduct micro-evaluations to assess material condition, including structural integrity and heat treatment effectiveness
Perform grain size determination using industry-recognized methodologies (e.g., ASTM E112)
Execute macro examinations for weld evaluation, defect identification, and structural verification
Perform microhardness testing (e.g., Vickers, Knoop) for case depth analysis and material comparison
Carry out phase determination through microscopy, etching, and other metallographic techniques
Customer Interface:
Serve as the primary technical contact for assigned customer projects
Communicate clearly with customers regarding technical questions, test procedures, and results interpretation
Provide regular updates on project status, turnaround times, and any technical concerns or delays
Reporting & Compliance:
Prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate reports in accordance with internal standards and customer requirements
Ensure all testing procedures comply with applicable industry standards (e.g., ASTM, SAE, AMS)
Support audits and participate in quality reviews as needed
Skills / QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
2+ years of experience in metallurgical testing
Proficiency in microscopy, microhardness testing, and metallographic preparation
Strong customer service and technical communication skills
Experience with laboratory information systems and reporting software
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
Work Environment
This role is performed in a combination of laboratory and office settings. The position requires routine use of microscopes, hardness testing equipment, and metallographic preparation tools. The candidate must be able to:
Stand or sit for extended periods while preparing and analyzing samples
Use fine motor skills to handle and manipulate small specimens and tools with precision
Occasionally lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including lab coats, gloves, and safety glasses
Work around chemicals used in etching and sample preparation, adhering strictly to safety and handling guidelines
Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with lab safety protocols
This position may occasionally require flexible hours to meet client deadlines or accommodate urgent testing needs.
