The Nursing Department Leader is responsible for monitoring performance of the staff and all patient care activities of the Emergency Department. The Nursing Department Leader performs all functions in a professional and ethical manner and collaborates with other members of the health care team to ensure the provision of quality patient care. *_Essential Functions:_* * The Nursing Department Leader delivers patient care in compliance with standards of care and practice and demonstrates competency in emergency care specific to the unit. * Makes decisions on a variety of unit and personnel needs, meeting patient care requirements and financial expectations. * Integrates the department into the primary functions of the hospital by collaborating with other members of the health care team. * Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services, and integrate those policies and procedures with other departments as appropriate. * Evaluates and reviews staffing levels to maintain a sufficient level of qualified and competent staff providing care. * Determines the qualifications and competency of unit staff and provides for the orientation and continuing education and training to maintain and improve competency. * Provides for the continuous assessment and improvement of cost-effective quality patient care services. * Performs annual unit assessment and performance improvement assessment, evaluates unit equipment and makes recommendations for space and use of other resources, such as patient services provided by off-site resources. * Provides unit specific marketing and educational activities to the community. * May be required to perform other duties as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer. * Monitors and evaluates the delivery of patient care and completion of assigned tasks. * Selects applicants for employment, interviews applicants, and makes recommendations in relation to hiring or retaining employees. * Monitors the environment for safety, cleanliness, comfort and satisfaction for patients/families and personnel, maintaining safety and infection control policies and procedures. * Takes responsibility for and maintains continuing education to assist in essential duties. *_Education:_* Associates degree required; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. *_Licenses/Certifications:_* Current Virginia RN license is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is strongly preferred. *_Experience:_*Must have five (5) or more years of previous nursing experience in an emergency department. Must have at least one (1) year of management experience.
