JOB SUMMARY

Provides daily pharmacy technical and professional services to inpatients, outpatients and other Hospital departments. Dispenses prescriptions and counsels patients on the correct use of medications. Provides drug information to patients and healthcare professionals in the Hospital. Responds to routine and emergency requests in a prompt, efficient manner requiring some independent judgment, a good level of technical knowledge and a high degree of accuracy. The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury.

PERFORMANCE DUTIES

Ø  Perform all functions of a Pharmacy Technician when competency is achieved.

Ø  Reviews, processes and dispenses outpatient prescriptions and counsels outpatients on the proper use of medication. Receives verbal prescriptions from physician for outpatient dispensing.

Ø  Reviews written medication orders to determine clarity, reasonable dose, schedule and appropriate medication usage. Consults directly with physicians if change or clarification is needed and enters appropriate clarification to inpatient charts.

Ø  Checks unit dose and automated system medications for accuracy and completeness against computer printout or computer generated labels.

Ø  Compounds special topical and internal dosage forms not available through pharmaceutical manufacturers in accordance with established departmental practice.

Ø  Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

Ø  Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St Mary Mercy Livonia. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

Ø  Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SMML.

Ø  Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe

SUPPLEMENTAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.       Participates in ongoing  studies, projects and research under the direction of management and the clinical staff.

2.      Participates in Drug Use Evaluation (DUE) and Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) programs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

A.                Education

Ø  Currently enrolled in at least the first professional year of study in an accredited college or school of Pharmacy.

B.                 Licensure

Ø  Current State of Michigan License as a Pharmacy Intern

C.                 Training and Experience

Ø  None required.

Ø  Must have a working knowledge of pharmacokinetic principles and patient monitoring techniques.

DEMANDS

Ø  Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations correctly.

Ø  Ability to stand for long periods of time (at least four and up to eight hours per day) or to walk long distances without difficulty.

Ø  Basic typing skills. Basic computers skills to do order entry, generate reports, retrieve data and diagnose minor printer problems.

Ø  Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 100% of the time when processing medication orders including: Automatic Distribution System, Outpatient, Inpatient, Order Entry, First Dosing, Intravenous Room Set-up, Intravenous Admixture, and Bulk Manufacturing.

Ø  Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement when prioritizing work responsibilities.

Ø  Ability to successfully complete an internal examination covering departmental procedure in all work areas. Ability to successfully complete an aseptic technique testing and challenge test on a regular basis.

Ø  Interpersonal skills necessary for effective communication with patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel in order to explain prescription use and gather and exchange other medication information.

Ø  Analytical skills needed to effectively review the appropriateness of medication orders and to respond to drug information questions.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS

Ø  Works under close supervision and under the control and personal charge of a Registered Pharmacist.

Ø  Works under the general supervision of the Manager Operations, Manager Clinical and Group Lead.
