Pharmacy Technician

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pharmacy Technician to join our inpatient pharmacy team.

 

This position may be eligible for a $5,000 sign on bonus with a two year commitment!

 

About the position:

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position that includes working variable shifts to ensure 24/7 staffing of our inpatient pharmacy. This position requires working rotating weekend and holiday shifts. The recruitment team and pharmacy leadership will place the final candidate in the appropriate title and pay rate based on their experience. The minimum hiring rate for a Pharmacy Tech, Associate is $18.04/hour.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Distribution:

Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationships during the medication distribution process. Participate in the distribution of medications, including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements. Retrieve discontinued medications and return (and credit if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.

Filling:

Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required. Assist in the preparation of oral and injectable medications (including intravenous admixtures and TPN) for the correct patient at the appropriate time using proper technique. Consistently work in the Sterile Product area preparing cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy) using proper aseptic technique.

General:

Assist in the training of pharmacy personnel and students. Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Department regulations. Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment. Ensure all medications are safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations. Maintain all patient information and records, and update the pharmacy computer system as required. Maintain all pertinent documentation, including eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs, etc. Maintain and update automated med stations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts. Participate in departmental quality improvement activities to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care. Practice appropriate hand hygiene both in the pharmacy and in the units. Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels in applicable areas such as pharmacy medication stock rooms, automated medication carousels, and automated dispensing machines. Provide and receive information via telephone, person-to-person, or written communication to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists. Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records. Comply with Federal and State laws such as HIPAA, regulations such as OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS. Finalize sales using the cash register, following proper cash handling policies and procedures.

 

Investigational:

Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
