Phlebotomist - Fern Park, FL Job Description The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Responsibilities + Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately. + Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data. + Decontaminate work areas and update patient information as needed. + Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. + Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, clearly and courteously. + Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. + Fully understand and execute all physician orders. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. + Ensure test requisitions or computer labels match scripts 100% accurately. + Package specimens for transport, storing them according to required temperatures. + Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, label accurately, and follow procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the specimens. + Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. + Attend annual department training sessions. + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Essential Skills + Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required. + Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. + High School Diploma or GED. + 0-2 years of relevant experience. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy. + Knowledge of healthcare and laboratory procedures. Work Environment This role is situated within a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, requiring adherence to strict protocols and safety regulations. The environment may involve handling various medical equipment and specimens, necessitating a thorough understanding of procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
