**Job Summary and Qualifications**
The Medical Physicist practices independently in radiation oncology physics and ensures the safe and accurate delivery of radiation dose to cancer patients. They are primarily and professionally engaged in the design optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans. This role functions as an integral member of the radiation oncology team. The Medical Physicist is responsible for the design and implementation of the aspects of the quality management program that involve the use of radiotherapy equipment and therapeutic radioisotopes. They are also responsible for the radiation protection of patients and staff members.
**What qualifications you will need:**
+ Master’s Degree required.
+ Must be ABR Board Certification eligible.
+ ABR Board Certification in Therapeutical Radiological Physics preferred.
+ Knowledgeable in areas of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
+ Expertise in the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics to develop optimal treatment plans.
+ Knowledgeable in health care informatics-including the resources, devices and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data.
+ Working knowledge of radiation safety principles and practices as well as current rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other regulatory agencies.
**What you will do in this role:**
+ Perform acceptance testing, calibration, and safety surveys of imaging and radiation therapy equipment.
+ Perform commissioning of radiation therapy equipment and setting up baseline for routine quality management program.
+ Serve as the liaison for machine maintenance and repair.
+ Supervise radiation treatment design and planning processes.
+ Perform patient specific quality assurance using appropriate phantom and measuring devices.
+ Perform and supervise redundancy checks of dose calculations using manual or automated methods.
+ Perform a holistic review of radiation treatments for each patient including initial physics checks, weekly chart checks, and end of treatment reviews.
+ Routinely supervise image registration of all applicable modalities in reference to target delineation by radiation oncologists.
+ Consult with radiation oncologists in the development of special physics consult of treatment strategies.
+ Participate directly in the treatment planning and verification of special treatment procedures including stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy, high dose rate brachytherapy, and low dose rate brachytherapy.
+ Develop purchasing and acceptance specifications for imaging and radiation therapy equipment.
+ Consult with radiation oncologists, as required, concerning patients’ doses and optimization of patient treatment plans and delivery.
+ Develop, implement, and supervise quality control programs in the radiology or radiation oncology department.
+ Supervise of the design and construction of patient treatment aids or special devices including blocks, compensators, molds, etc.
+ Supervise brachytherapy procedures when applicable and abiding by NRC/State regulations.
+ Research and develop new devices and modalities for improved therapeutic uses of radiation.
+ Provide technical direction of radiation oncology staff as specified by the department medical director.
+ Develop policy and procedures related to radiation safety and radiation oncology physics. Maintain membership on applicable committees, such as the Safety Committee, the Radiation Safety Committee, Radioactive Drug Research Committee, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Committee, Disaster Committee, Cancer Care Committee, and Institutional Review Board.
+ Participate in clinical and translational research.
