**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education**
+ Bachelor¿s Degree in Engineering, Science, Safety Management, or related field
+ In lieu of a bachelor¿s degree, a High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience in an Electrical, Mechanical, Structural or related field, in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered
**Experience**
+ Four (4) years of experience with auditing, inspection, requirements management, OSHA compliance, Transit Operations, Maintenance, or Safety
**Certification/Licensure**
+ N/A
**Preferred**
+ Professional Engineer (PE) license
+ The USDOT Transportation Institute Transit (TSI) Safety and Security Program (TSSP-Rail and/or TSSP-Bus) certificate
+ Experience in Transit Safety

**SUMMARY**
The Safety Certification Specialist provides direct support and subject matter expertise for the execution of Metro¿s Safety & Security Certification Program. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that design and operating hazards and security vulnerabilities are identified, evaluated, and adequately mitigated before the commencement of service for all required projects throughout the Metro agency. This role partners with project management staff and their contractors to verify that technical specifications, design criteria, safety and security codes, standards, and industry practices are all adhered to throughout the project lifecycle.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Participates in the design review process for Metro project designs, in order to identify hazards and vulnerabilities that require mitigation.
+ Verifies that safety and security requirements are identified, incorporated into, and achieved during project design, construction/installation, testing, and start-up through development of checklists and the conduction of audits and inspections that occur throughout the project lifecycle.
+ Mitigates potential safety hazards and security issues at the earliest possible phase of the project, with resolutions tracked and documented.
+ Facilitates the creation of new or necessary changes to existing system safety plans, system security plans, operating and maintenance plans and procedures, rulebooks, and training programs, where appropriate.
**OTHER FUNCTIONS**
+ Conduct performance monitoring for projects undergoing certification.
+ Participates in the development and execution of safety activities and initiatives and the implementation of corporate safety practices, policies and programs.
+ Communicates and interfaces with various departments within WMATA as well as external oversight agencies including the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) & Washington Metropolitan Safety Commission (WMSC) on Safety Certification activities.
+ Attends all required departmental and agency-wide safety meetings.
