Senior Excise Tax Manager- Motor Fuel

Job Description:

The Senior Excise Tax Manager of Motor Fuel is responsible for leading and assisting the staff and seniors through the execution of strategic direction, management and oversight of routine operations relating to fuel taxes, while ensuring timely and accurate completion of motor fuel tax compliance. The Senior Excise Tax Manager of Motor Fuel seeks to develop and implement innovative automation, drive process improvement opportunities, and develop policies related to motor fuel taxes.  This individual leads the fuel tax team to integrate with all RaceTrac fuel-related operations.  Manage vendor relationships to ensure the performance standards in agreements are met or exceeded, in addition to having accountability for execution and measure of success.

Responsibilities:

Partners closely with leadership to establish and execute on strategies to enhance tax processes and procedures.Leads the team in fuel data integration with all areas of RaceTrac to enhance knowledge and efficiency. Works closely with staff to train and provide the team with the necessary tools and support achieve goals of the department and organization.Lead and manage federal, state, and local motor fuel and sales tax audits.  Identify and communicate tax advice, feedback, and solutions with key stakeholders.Works closely with leadership and HR to identify talent needs, develops, and grows talent to support future roles in the organization.Partners cross functionally with other internal departments especially Fuel, Income Tax and Accounting to support the department and Company's strategic goals.Leads the motor fuel tax data process in Right Angle and reviews vendor-prepared return compliance.  Reviews and investigates issues and communicates with government officials regarding tax questions as necessary.  Utilize continuous improvement and process analysis tools including robotics and innovative software to drive innovation and efficiency across the tax department.  Research and interpret federal, state, and local tax law and assess company policies to ensure taxes are prepared in compliance with tax legislation.Remains abreast of industry trends to maintain competitive advantage and drive compliance.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting from a 4-year College or University.CPA Licensed or CMI certified5+ years of direct motor fuel tax experience in above and below the rack transactions. 2+ years’ experience in leading a team and execution of strategic initiativesStrong mentoring and staff development skills are requiredDirect experience in performing fuel tax audits and establishing operational processesAbility to utilize Alteryx preferred.Retail, Energy and/or Real Estate experience a plus.Strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to assume increasing responsibilities in a rapidly changing environment.Must display strong communication skills with the ability to explain tax issues in a manner that non-tax people can understand. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite - particularly Excel. Working knowledge of Avalara motor fuel tax software and Right Angle preferred. Ability to plan and implement needed tasks and projects in a time efficient manner.
