Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Testing & Troubleshooting: Conduct experiments and tests to characterize component and system performance in electrical and optical/fiber assemblies using various test equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, arbitrary waveform generators, spectrum analyzers, power meters, beam profilers, and signal generators. Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with assemblies, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. Write test procedures and document test results accurately and thoroughly. Communicate test results for component and system-level testing to other members of the team. Develop and Test of Prototype Systems: Participate in the design, development, integration, and assembly of fiber-based, bulk optic, opto-mechanical, and opto-electrical systems and components for lab experiments, prototypes, and customer deliverables. Design and set up experiments and test fixtures. Perform precise assembly, repair, and testing at the component and system level (includes soldering, cable harness fabrication, and fiber optic splicing).Education & Experience
A minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without years experience; or technical background/training with advanced relevant experience. Technical Know-How: Strong knowledge of laser systems and analog and digital electronics. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams). Experience soldering for building cable assemblies and rework of circuit boards. Experience assembling, aligning, and cleaning of bulk optics (e.g., mirrors, lenses, polarizers, filters, etc.) Experience developing test applications using LabVIEW or other programming languages/tools is a plus. Experience Testing and Evaluating Prototype Systems: Past experience developing and executing test procedures, testing integrated hardware/software systems, and documenting results.Skills & Other Requirements
Hands-On Skills: Experience using test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, arbitrary waveform generators, spectrum analyzers, power meters, beam profilers, and signal generators. Experience with hand tools and basic power tools. Experience assembling and splicing optical fiber and fiber-coupled components. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team. Ability to identify and develop approaches to solving problems. Eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance, if one is required to perform job responsibilities.
Working Conditions
Primarily an engineering function with office and engineering lab working conditions. Also includes work in a cleanroom environment which requires wearing cleanroom apparel such as a gown, shoe covers, hairnet, and gloves.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift/move test equipment up to 50 lb. Ability to perform fiber splicing, component assembly, and optic alignment tasks which requires use of hand tools. Ability to perform circuit board rework, soldering, cable assembly, and component assembly tasks which requires use of hand tools and soldering tools.
