System Planning Engineer/Analyst – APC Resource Planning

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE & TRAVEL:
This position will be located in Birmingham, AL at the Alabama Power Company corporate headquarters. This position will adhere to the Company’s hybrid work schedule of four (4) days in-office and one (1) day remote. This position requires minimal travel (day and overnight, less than 25%)POSITION OVERVIEW:
Alabama Power Company (APC) is experiencing tremendous change as the electric utility industry continues to evolve during a period of unprecedented load growth. APC Resource Planning is at the forefront of that change. This position will directly support the planning activities of APC, but will work closely with multiple departments and organizations throughout APC, System Planning, and the other Southern Company operating companies. Specifically, this position will help manage, engage in and support the following activities:
Develop integrated system plans (generation, fuel, transmission) to serve APC’s customers Coordinate with multiple teams within APC and SCS, including regulatory, economic development/marketing, commercial operations, transmission, legal, wholesale marketing (SWE), finance and accounting Support the planning, procurement, approval, and execution of new capacity and renewable energy projects Support APC’s renewable energy portfolio and growth, including self-build renewable projects, requests for proposal (RFPs), power purchase agreements (PPAs), and unsolicited renewable energy bids Help develop the annual Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and triennial IRP submittal to the Alabama Public Service Commission Support generation fleet optimization efforts including retirement analysis, fuel conversion studies, unit-life extension considerations, large capital investment decisions and new resource additions Coordinate and manage the production of informational deliverables related to APC’s generation fleet and planning activities to various groups within APC and SCS, and with external parties including regulatory filings.POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in: Business, Engineering, or Sciences desired Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex topics Understanding of marginal cost dispatch, production costing or economic optimization modeling principles desired Knowledge of power plant operations, power pool operations, utility finance (including revenue requirements and cash flow analysis), generation economic evaluation, engineering economics desired Familiarity with legislation, regulations, and market structures associated with the electricity industry or the energy industry more broadly is beneficial Ability to multi-task and support on-going multiple completing projects is plus Proficient with MS suite with specific emphasis on Excel.BEHAVIORAL ATTRIBUTES
