Job Description
The Veterinarian provides daily veterinary care, preventive and ongoing clinical veterinary care for all laboratory animals. The role involves overseeing the anesthesia and surgical programs of the Center and maintaining all practices in accordance with AAALAC, USDA, OLAW, and NY State Department of Health standards.
Responsibilities
+ Provide veterinary care to all laboratory animal species.
+ Assist in maintaining a comprehensive surgical and clinical veterinary care program to ensure appropriate animal welfare and high-quality animal health care.
+ Support a rapidly expanding pre-clinical research program focused on cardiovascular device development and testing, and the investigation of novel therapies for cardiovascular disease.
+ Prepare and maintain records concerning physical examinations and diagnostic decisions, ensuring compliance with study protocols and applicable regulations.
+ Participate in training and educational activities involving the use of animals for the veterinary staff and research team.
+ Maintain interest in pursuing postgraduate training in laboratory animal medicine, and in training veterinary students and post-doctoral associates.
+ Engage in multidisciplinary research activities including developing animal models, testing, analysis, and publications with a focus on veterinary cardiovascular medicine.
+ Provide guidance to technical veterinary staff and make clinical decisions.
+ Assure compliance with study protocols and any protocol amendments.
+ Record observations onto appropriate record forms.
+ Ensure adequate sanitary and health care precautions for all research animals.
+ Document any circumstances that may affect animal welfare, and/or the quality and integrity of a study.
+ Report any health or medical conditions that may adversely affect a study.
Essential Skills
+ DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited institution or equivalent.
+ Veterinary licensure in at least one state (NY State preferred).
+ USDA Veterinary Accreditation required.
+ 3-5 years of work experience in companion animal or mixed animal (sheep or swine preferred) clinical practice highly desired.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
+ Knowledge of Microsoft products and any animal facility-related software.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in an animal research environment is desired but not mandatory.
+ Lab Animal Residency or 2+ years of experience working with laboratory animals (emergency, livestock, large animal/equine experience most transferable).
+ Regulatory compliance experience.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $125000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
